Charge Into Fire Safety!

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day—from phones and laptops to tools, toys, e-bikes, and scooters. When damaged or charged improperly, they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.

Be a charging superhero:

  • Use the right charger: Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Charge on a hard surface: Keep devices on a table or desk—not beds, couches, or under pillows, where heat can get trapped.
  • Know the warning signs: Stop using a device if it becomes very hot, swells, smokes, or develops an unusual smell.
  • Unplug when fully charged: Don’t leave devices plugged in longer than necessary.
  • Charge larger batteries safely: E-bikes, scooters, and power tools should be charged outside and away from exits.
  • Travel smart: On airplanes, keep devices visible while charging. Never charge them in overhead bins, and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane.

Small charging habits can make a big difference in preventing home fires.

Come see your local firefighters, learn lifesaving skills, enjoy some chili, and charge into fire safety with us!

We’ll see you October 4!
