Common land shared by neighbors and residents for growing vegetables and flowers. Community gardens can be found in neighborhoods, schools, churches, parks and public lands.
Participating residents can share resources, tools, experience and knowledge. First time gardeners and experienced growers can share in community gardens.
Each person or family is assigned a plot of land that is between 5’x10’ to 10’x30’. The user would sign an agreement and pay a nominal fee for the use of the land. Benefits:
Save – grow your own fresh produce and save money Fresh – enjoy produce straight from your garden Activity – enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise Community – get to know your neighbors Learning – discover something new about food
Why a Test Garden:
A test garden will help gauge community interest in establishing permanent community garden opportunities in Plain Township and New Albany.
A test garden will provide learning opportunities for interested residents and valuable feedback for future planning. A test garden will also help address the practical issues of establishing community garden opportunities for our residents: location, access, services, level of interest and number of lots needed.
Where:
The initial test garden will be located at the Plain Township Fire Station, 9500 Johnstown Road. This location is close to the village center and the site of many community meetings.
This location has access to water, storage and other facilities. Interested residents are invited to attend regular informational meetings and to observe the garden as the season progresses. There will be opportunities to help prep, plant, mulch, weed and pick.
Information: Regular updates will be posted to the Plain Township website at www.plaintownship.org. Questions can be directed to Assistant Administrator Ben Collins at
or 855-2085.
